Teacher profile
Penny was introduced to Hatha Yoga as a child by her father who taught in Sydney in the early 1970s with Acharya Upendra Roy. She studied classical Indian and Middle Eastern dance forms for several years before beginning regular yoga classes in 1989 with Eve Gryzbowski and Colin Rivers at the Sydney Yoga Centre. Penny gained her Introductory Iyengar Yoga Teacher's Certificate in 1997.
Since 1992 Penny has taught in the Iyengar method at the Sydney Yoga Centre, Australian School of Yoga and the Hatha Yoga Room and traveled regularly to India from 1995 to 2003 to study with BKS Iyengar and family. Penny has studied with Sri K Pattabhi Jois of Mysore, TVK Desikacher of Madras and Simon Borg Olivier of Yoga Synergy in Sydney. Penny taught at Yoga Synergy from 1998-2003.
In 1993 Penny began classes with Zhander Remete, founder of Yoga of the Shadow School with whom she continues to learn. She founded the Hatha Yoga Desha in 2003 to teach the Shadow Yoga forms.
Penny has a Bachelor of Arts degree (majoring in Classical and Middle Eastern Archaeology) and a Post-graduate Diploma in Museum Studies from the University of Sydney and is Curator of Sport and Leisure History at the Australian National Maritime Museum.
